Seward
After 3 nights in Homer, we headed to Seward on the Wednesday over on the east side of the Kenai Peninsula.
The weather had closed in and we could hardly see any views on the way there at all. It was not a particularly eventful drive, but slow and wet.
Our hotel in Seward was very old and rather like something out of the wild west. However it was near to the town centre and the bed was comfortable. The young man who looked after our hotel seemed to do everything and was basically 'on call' if we needed him. He pointed us in the direction of some scenic drives and things to do in Seward.
It was still very wet so Maurice had a rest while I went out for an explore in the rain. I had a cup of tea in a coffee house at the bottom of the street which had been part of the rail station in days gone by.
After we had rested we took a short run in the car along a dirt road beyond Seward and had our first glimpse of sea otters
We headed back to the hotel before dodging the rain and heading out to a couple of local bars - the Yukon and Tony's Bar and liquor store. We ended the evening in Thorn's Showcase Lounge and had a bite to eat there too.
The next day dawned dry and bright and we drove the short distance from our hotel to the cafe with the 'complimentary breakfast'. The hotel didn't have the facilities (any facilities to be truthful) so a voucher for breakfast was provided.
Our activity for the day was our amazing 7.5 hour boat trip from Seward where we saw stunning scenery, wildlife and ate a splendid 'all-you-can-eat' lunch. All seating was allocated and we shared our table with a father and late teens son from Oakland, California.
It was a fantastic day, best summed up in this short movie.
We saw the cutest sea otter on our return to harbour too!
The evening was spent in the local bar again before heading to bed for our last night in Alaska.
